Bolsa Chica Restoration Objectives

To protect and enhance:

  • Migratory shorebird, seabird, waterfowl overwintering habitat value
  • Nesting habitat for shorebirds and seabirds
  • Estuarine fish habitat
  • Nesting and foraging conditions for Threatened or Endangered species (CLT, LFCR, WSP, BSS)

Mix of habitats to include:

  • Perennial brackish ponds, seasonal ponds/salt flats, pickleweed dominated flats, cordgrass and mud flat intertidal, and well-flushed subtidal seawater volume

Other Objectives:

  • Achieve minimum feasible operations and maintenance burden, and no degradation of existing flood protection levels
  • Protect the interests of contiguous property owners
  • Long-term management for native fish and wildlife
  • Incorporate passive and non-intrusive human activity
  • Phased removal of all oil activity
  • Monitoring of biological success of completed project
