Wild on Watersheds – Citizen Water Quality Monitoring Protocols

Joe Dillon of the Habitat Conservation Division worked with a team of personnel from the State Water Resources Control Board, California Department of Fish and Game, the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts and non-governmental organizations to develop a guidebook for citizen-lead monitoring of water quality conditions.  This guidebook was published as part of the “Wild on Watersheds” program and gave guidance on estimating flows, measuring suspended sediment concentrations, collecting turbidity data and a few other physical water quality parameters.  The handbook can still be used for several of the parameters such as suspended sediment and flow estimations, but the methods are outdated for some other parameters due to technological advances (and cheaper equipment prices!).
