Sonoma County Salmon Coalition

The Sonoma County Salmon Coalition was formed to protect and enhance existing habitat, and to restore historic habitat; to promote recover and maintenance of salmonid fish populations and to create sustainable partnerships that identify and promote regional water enhancement programs while balancing the need to provide for regional economic viability and regulatory certainty.

Joe Dillon of the Habitat Conservation Division is working with Sonoma County Salmon Coalition participants to develop a set of best management practices (BMPs) for grape growing that will contribute to recovery of Central California Coast steelhead trout.  Following these BMPs and executing projects identified as necessary within can bring the private landowners into compliance with the Endangered Species Act and may be an integral part of a Habitat Conservation Plan or Safe Harbor Agreement for a vineyard property.  BMPs involving vineyard layout, erosion control, drainage systems, riparian area management and restoration, water diversion facilities/infrastructure, chemical applications and roads will make up the document.
