National Marine Fisheries Service Work Plan: Administrative and Scientific Careers at the SWFSC and SWR. Issue: Not enough trained minority and women candidates for positions at the Center and Region. The Southwest Fisheries Science Center and Regional Office of NOAAs National Marine Fisheries Service often gets inquiries for information on agency careers. These inquiries show that the community (including minority and women candidates) wants to know what is needed for a person to be employed at the Southwest Center and Region. Proposed Solution: Create a pamphlet that is updated annually, for the SWFSC and SWR, to answer questions such as: 1) What does a scientist/administrator do?; 2) What schools offer marine science programs?; 3) What courses should I take?; 4) What degrees do I need?; 5) What should I get my degree in?; 6) What about working with marine mammals?; and 7) What is the job outlook? The pamphlet can be distributed at each office or laboratory or at science fairs, career days or schools and can also be placed on the Centers web site. Links can be maintained between NMFSs web pages on NMFS careers (www.nmfs.gov/employment/nmfscareers.htm), strategies for pursuing a career in marine science (inia.cls.org/~welsberr/marspec/mmstrat1.htm) and other sites. Cost: $250.00/year/SWFSC, SWR Total Cost: $500.00 Action and Target Dates: Pamphlet drafted in January Pamphlet printed in February Web page created Pamphlet distributed as needed to local area schools in April.
