Missing: Jeffey Sampaga

Al Coan called the meeting to order in the small conference room, Southwest Fisheries Science Center, La Jolla California at 9:00AM. Patricia Mason participated via a conference call. The agenda (items I-V in this report) was approved and the subcommittee moved to discussions of the agenda items.

I. Discuss Website Needs:

Rob Bistodeau (EEO website developer and Administrative Subcommittee Chair) attended to this agenda item to get input into the development of two website needs 1) An awards suggestion box and 2) an EEO outreach efforts posting. Al Coan provided two mockup examples for each need and the committee modified the examples and the following recommendations were provided to Rob.

Project Description - John presented an example of what fisheries biologist do at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center to Junior High School Students at the Chula Vista Junior High School. The presentation did an excellent job of encouraging students to pursue careers in marine science.

The subcommittee recommended and accepted suggestions to list recommended awards by project type. Nancy Lo will enter her volunteer student Internship program and Patricia Mason her Laboratory’s hiring of a student intern as examples of Activities and Outreach Efforts.

II. Workplan Progress Reports:

Intern Workplan:

Al Coan, at the request of Nancy Lo, presented a draft email to be sent from the EEOAC to SW Region Supervisors announcing a student internship program and asking for interested participants. The email describes briefly the intern program and asks supervisors to seriously consider participating. The Regional Director will select one of the interested supervisors to receive a student intern for the next 4 years. Nancy will work with a SW Region volunteer to obtain students from local minority schools. The EEOAC will form a panel to review students and send three applicants on to the supervisor. The draft was reviewed and changed by subcommittee members and will be forwarded to Tim Price for consideration.

Nancy Lo will ask the EEOAC to elect 4 panel members at the July meeting. Tim Price will also be asked to seek travel funds to send the workplan coordinator to the internship site to work with the supervisors and a volunteer to get the project rolling.

Outreach Workplan

Debra Losey was able to review materials contained in the NOAA outreach package. She showed the subcommittee the package which consisted of rulers, pencils and 2 pamphlets on EEO and Diversity. In general, it was felt that the package would need a lot of additional materials to be useful. Debbie showed some directories and marine science lists that would provide materials for outreach activities. She also mentioned videos as possible outreach materials. The subcommittee urged her to consider PDF files of posters generated by Center and Region staff as well as NOAA fish posters and props that other staff had used in past presentations. The committee also suggested posting the materials on the website where staff could review materials online and developing mockups of ideas to present to headquarters for additional funding.

Awarding EEO Efforts Workplan

The major effort in this work plan was to develop the website for award suggestions. The results were presented under agenda item I.

IV. Other Business:

No Other Business was discussed.

V. Close

Al thanked everyone for their participation and canceled the July Programs Subcommittee meeting as he will be on travel or on vacation through July. Nancy Lo has consented to present the results of the June Programs Subcommittee meeting to the EEOAC committee meeting in July. The next Programs Subcommittee meeting will be held on August 16, 2000, at 9:00 AM. The meeting was closed at 10:15 AM.
