SOUTHWEST EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

MEETING MINUTES

October 5, 2005

Attendees: Jeremy Rusin, Jessica Kondel, Nancy Fisher, Jeff McLain, Jerry Norton, Rod Miller, and Advisor Maria Harris.

  1. Call to Order was at 1:09 p.m.
  2. The September 2005 minutes were approved.
  3. Officer’s Reports: Jeremy reported that there was no update on the status of Carlos Garza’s daughter. An update of Tim Price was given that he attended a Long Beach party and looks great. He is awaiting final approval of disability retirement.
  4. Subcommittee Reports:
    1. Program: There were no meetings in September. Rosemary is working with the committee on establishing regular meetings.
    2. Administrative: They held a quick meeting in September and updated their draft Student Intern Work Plan. Look for an article and picture of their student intern in the next NOAA Diversity Newsletter.
    3. Personnel: A meeting was held on 9/22/05 which was very productive. See Old Business for details. Next meeting is scheduled for 10/13/05 at 1:00 PM.
  5. Old Business:
    1. Draft Guidelines for Interview Questions (Personnel Sub.): Nancy updated the group on additions to the questionnaire from Barbara Schloetter, WASC. There was a group discussion and it was approved. Jeremy will forward the questionnaire to interviewers throughout the region with a hard deadline to respond with their comments/questions.
    2. Listserver Status Update (Personnel Sub.): Jeff updated the group on his efforts and progress to produce automated job search e-mails from Quick Hire. If queries from Quick Hire can be successfully pasted into e-mail, they can be sent to the ListServer for distribution to target addresses. He’s been having a problem getting it to work, so Rick Rogers has been assisting him by working on it.
    3. Publicity of Student Contributions in the SWR (Admin. Sub.): Again, look for next NOAA Diversity Newsletter for picture and article on student intern.
    4. Draft Work Plan: IDP Training Follow-up (Program Sub.): Rosemary has been revising the work plan.
  6. New Business:
    1. Draft Intern Work Plan (Norton and Troian): Jerry would like to kick around ideas with people that have used student interns as to what will benefit both the intern and the staff. Ideas and a discussion can be conducted by contacting jerry at jerrold.g.norton@noaa.gov.
    2. SW EEOAC Mentor Program (Personnel Sub.): Jeff McLain attended an AFS Conference where there was a session in which someone spoke about a mentoring program for minorities. He did not attend the session, but contacted the speaker of the session who clarified that he did not have such a program. He does, however, have a program that helps students manage their careers. Jeff will check with AFS to see if they have anything related to mentoring programs.
  7. Announcements: None.
  8. Next Meeting Date: November 2, 2005, at 1:00 p.m.
  9. The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
