EEO Advisory Committee

Southwest Region

Minutes: January 7, 2004

Attendees: Jessica Kondel, Rosemary Troian, Carlos Garza, Nancy Fisher, Jeremy Rusin, Laura Tezer, Stephanie Johnson, Brian Cluer, and Rick Wantuck.. Maria Harris and Marty Golden were also present as advisors Absent: Tim Price, Eleanor Domalaog.

In the absence of Tim Price, vice- chairman Jeremy Rusin called the meeting to order at 1:05 pm. Rick Wantuck reported that he had been selected for an 18-month NOAA-wide leadership program and he said that his attendance at the EEOAC would be sporadic. The committee was extremely proud of Rick and agreed that we wanted him to remain on the committee, even if he had to miss some meetings. Brian Cluer is also in the Santa Rosa office so we will still have continuity on the committee from this area.

OFFICERS' REPORTS

There were no officers' reports.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Program: Marty Golden is an advisor to the EEOAC and is still committed to training people on the use of the IDP. Two possible training dates for the Region have already passed. Rod said that if the committee could find a good date and Rod could not be present, another manager could take Rod's place. Marty said that the trainers would be Tim Price, Maria Harris and himself. If the SWC can find a date when most of it's employees can take the training, then that training may be held before the Region training.

Rosemary Troian reported that she and Sherri Charter have been trying to arrange a date when a tour of the Jordan could be held. April and June dates are not going to work, so our next chance will be in December. Jim Milbury wants to be involved in arranging this tour. Jessica was an officer on the Jordan so she said she would be glad to help with the tour also.

Troian will try to set up a program subcommittee meeting in the near future.

Administration: The administration subcommittee met in March and discussed the EEOAC Website. They added a link to the SWR Website which tells people how to subscribe to our Listserver. Rosemary Troian will check at the SWC about adding this link to our Webpage. The administration subcommittee will have a meeting soon and the time and date will be announced to the committee.

Personnel: Eleanor is the acting chair of the personnel subcommittee. She was not in attendance today, but a personnel subcommittee meeting will be held April 15 at 9:00. It was pointed out that the list of members with their locations should be on the EEOAC Website.

Old Business: IDP was discussed under subcommittee reports.

New Business: None.

Announcements: Carlos Garza announced the California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) has an Earth System Science Internship Program for the summer funded by NOAA. Students from Monterey Bay area Junior colleges and from CSUMB are eligible to apply. Targeted students are the under-represented. Carlos's group just started the paperwork to get an intern. The deadline for application is April 26.

Carlos also said that they do a 3 day job shadow program and bring different students in during this time to learn about our research and about possible careers in science. This started a discussion on the "ideal" age of our audiences. Marty and Rosemary agreed that children in grades 3-5 are most receptive.

Marty brought up the idea of a "tracking system" to see if we could somehow trace how effective our outreach efforts are. Ideally, we would know which students have gone on to pursue a career in Marine Science. Troian noted that Bill Fox had mentioned this same request. Put on your thinking caps everyone.

Next Meeting:

Our next meeting will be May 5 at 1:00p.m. Members should continue to hold the first Wed. of each month free so they can attend the meetings.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:40 p.m.
